Property Description
Spanning multiple phases over several years, Stewart-Cooper-Newell Architects assisted Sandhills Community College in a series of critical stages to design, develop and build a new, regional fire and emergency services training center. Initially, the project began with site selection and master plan development. The site chosen was a steeply sloping, rural site near a crucial town reservoir. This location necessitated providing proper sedimentation and impoundment basins on the downhill-sloping portion of the site, to protect the reservoir.
Completed in August 2011, the center includes a commercial burn building, a training / drill tower, pumper test / drafting pits, and exterior training areas for vehicle extraction and burn props. The site also includes a 2-story, residential burn building with training for attic ventilation & attic access, and burn locations in the foyer, bedrooms, living areas and kitchen.
