Property Description
The Second District Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad project is located in Valley Lee, MD and is a member of the St. Mary’s County Volunteer Fire Service. The new station includes a residential wing, administrative wing, large training room, fitness area, as well as, gathering spaces for the volunteer staff, and seven drive thru apparatus bays with adjacent training mezzanines.
Because Valley Lee is located near the coast a tower element was incorporated at the front entry to introduce a vertical element that is reminiscent of the light houses found in St. Mary’s County, as well as, providing a beacon on the new station to clarify the fire station entrance. The illuminated windows at the top of the tower further enhance the light house influence at the building’s front facade.
The living, sleeping and administrative spaces are shared between the fire department and EMS however the apparatus bays are separated by the station’s support spaces. 3 bays are dedicated to EMS and 4 bays are dedicated to the fire department. Between the EMS and FD bays are the separate EMS and FD turnout gear rooms, separate storages spaces and shared Decon/Laundry, Report Office, Shower/Toilet Rooms, Compressor Room and Tool Shop.
The station houses four groups: full time fire staff, volunteer fire staff, full time EMS staff, volunteer EMS staff. The original fire station located on the same site now serves as a social hall available to the community as a rental event space for weddings, banquets, private functions, and corporate and community events.
