OUR WORK
Facilities must be designed in such a way as to be flexible so that growth and future reconfigurations of the space can be accomplished in a logical and cost-effective way, remaining sensitive to the surrounding architecture and local context. This will involve smart design at the beginning by adopting a forward-looking approach in the placement of specific spaces, to allow for their growth and the core spaces that might serve them.

Fire & Rescue
We understand the critical nature of Fire Stations, what the design for each must accomplish and how to best help our clients achieve their unique goals.
Because we concentrate so heavily in the planning, design, and construction of fire stations, we are able to provide very valuable opinions of probable construction costs to our clients based on station bids we witness each month in our region.
However, if the Fire Department desires that we use a professional construction cost estimator during our design phases, we are happy to do so. I hope it is apparent that we take station design very seriously. We will bring the same level of attention and enthusiasm to the design of your Fire Station.
Law Enforcement
The functional spaces in a new facility have to be
configured correctly. We understand that the facility
exists as a tool for the Police Officers, and administrative professionals to perform their respective duties. If the spaces are not arranged in a manner to compliment and assist the staff with their work, it then becomes a liability, costing the Town precious manhours and creating a poor atmosphere for the employees and visitors. It is of the utmost importance that the building provides safety and security to all who utilize it.
Working closely with the Project Advisory Committee, SCNA will review space requirements for various personnel levels which will be based around research of accepted standards. Space standards shall then be developed for each personnel classification defined by the emergency responders, along with basic equipment standards, waiting areas, meeting rooms and other relevant space requirements. Prototypical space layouts for the various personnel classifications shall also be developed. These layouts will be generic in nature and used to illustrate furniture configurations.
911 & EOC
Since 1971, our award-winning team of architects and designers has successfully planned, designed and overseen the construction of over 600 public safety facility projects. We understand the critical nature of a 911 Center, what the goals and design must accomplish, and how to best help our clients achieve their unique goals.
Relying on our knowledge and expertise of public safety facilities and 911 communication design along with our experience of working on North Carolina projects, and the NC911 Grant Projects, our team will be able to help you program a facility that will accommodate the functions and needs of Bertie County and also support the development of the expanding daily operations of the 911 Communications Department.
Public Safety Training
We have planned and designed numerous Public Safety Training facilities. Our experience designing Public Safety Training Facilities extends back approximately 37 years, beginning with the design of the Gaston Regional Emergency Services Training Center in Gaston County.
We recently worked with Wayne County on the master planning of their new Public Safety Training Center, Isothermal Community College on the design and construction of a new Burn Building and Classroom Facility, Coastal Carolina Community College on the Master Plan and Design for their new Public Safety Training Center and Driving Pad; and Beaufort Community College on the design and construction of a new Public Safety driving track and classroom building. Currently, we are designing the new live fire shoot house for the North Carolina Department of Public Safety and the Samercand Training Academy.
Renovations & Additions
Renovation is updating or improving existing buildings to meet current needs and standards, often including structural modifications, system upgrades, and aesthetic enhancements. Upfit refers to adapting interior spaces for specific uses, such as offices or retail, through alterations like partitioning, lighting, and finishes.
Preservation focuses on maintaining and safeguarding historically significant buildings or elements, often involving restoration, repair, and conservation efforts to retain their original character and cultural value. Together, these approaches allow architects to revitalize and repurpose existing structures while honoring their heritage and contributing to sustainable development.
Animal Care
Animal Care Facility focuses on creating spaces tailored to the needs of animals and their caregivers. It encompasses planning and designing shelters, veterinary clinics, laboratories, and other facilities that prioritize animal welfare, hygiene, and safety.
Design considerations include proper ventilation, temperature control, noise reduction, and durable materials. Layouts are optimized for efficient workflow, stress reduction, and disease prevention.
Animal care facility design aims to create environments that enhance the well-being of animals, facilitate effective care and research, and support the mission of organizations dedicated to animal welfare and conservation.
